Company Profile

Pixel Photonics GmbH

Pixel Photonics is a pioneering deep-tech start-up based in Münster, Germany. The company was founded in 2021 by Nicolai Walter, Wladick Hartmann, Christoph Seidenstücker, Fabian Beutel and Martin Wolff as a spin-off from the groups of Prof. Dr. Wolfram Pernice and Prof. Dr. Carsten Schuck at the University of Münster.

The company has developed a unique approach to integrate SNSPDs (Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors) on a chip waveguide. Pixel Photonics combines the superior features of SNSPDs with the versatility of an integrated photonic platform to provide highly parallelized, efficient and ultra-fast single-photon detection. While SNSPDs are inherently threshold detectors and insensitive to the number of photons in a detection event, waveguide integration and parallelization enable the use of SNSPDs for photon counting, paving the way for high-performance and scalable photonic quantum computing.

In addition, waveguide-integrated SNSPDs are suitable candidates for realizing or enhancing applications such as secure quantum key distribution (QDK), light imaging, detection and ranging, and bioimaging in microscopy.

The Dena detector series is available as a rack system or as a tabletop system. The instruments integrate a cryostat, electronics, helium compressor and vacuum system into compact and easy-to-use systems with user-friendly software. The detectors combine broad capabilities, high scalability and high speed counting.

Both the chip fabrication and the packaging are designed and manufactured in-house in Münster to ensure efficient, ultra-broadband, ultra-low noise and very fast devices. The international Pixel Photonics team currently consists of more than 30 employees and is constantly growing.
